About

I've built the machines, run the shop floor, and signed the contracts.

30+ years in technology, 25 in enterprise IT, on both the delivery side and the deal side. CROIA brings that to businesses that need a senior IT leader, but not a full-time one.

In my own words

My first venture, in 1992, was a side hustle, never a registered business: stuffing SCSI drives and server parts into desktop cases and selling them as high-end photo and video editing workstations, at prices I am still a little proud of. It went great until Apple changed the rules.

I learned early what it feels like when a bigger player changes the rules on a small business, and I have been on the small business owner's side of the table ever since.

After that I spent a decade in manufacturing as a machinist, tool and die maker and vision systems programmer. That's where my habit of doing things in the right order comes from, and where I learned that downtime costs real money.

Then came 25 years in enterprise IT. At Pomeroy I ran an Eastern US services organization of 800+ technicians and 43 team leads and managers, owned a services P&L of about $16.7M, and took service profitability up about 12%. On the deal side, I closed a $200M+ statewide enterprise storage contract that had to hold up under public scrutiny. It's the same discipline I'll bring to your $200K renewal.

Today I work with Fortune 500 accounts at a large OEM datacenter provider. CROIA is how I bring that experience to owners who need one accountable person for their IT.

The timeline

Thirty years, in order.

  1. 1992

    A side hustle

Custom photo and video editing workstations, built from SCSI drives and server parts. Until Apple changed the rules.

  2. The next decade

    The shop floor

Machinist, tool and die maker, vision systems programmer.

  3. 2003

A statewide contract, at 69% less

My team won a statewide out-of-warranty maintenance contract for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, at $2.7M a year against the previous contractor's $8.8M.

  4. At Pomeroy

    Delivery at scale

Ran the Eastern US services operation: 800+ technicians and 43 team leads and managers. Owned a services P&L of about $16.7M and took service profitability up about 12%.

  5. 2015

    Territory and quota

Grew the Eastern US territory 300% to $370M and hit 203% of a $70M quota (2015), at Pomeroy.

  6. The deal side

    $200M+ statewide storage contract

    Closed under public scrutiny.

  7. Now

    CROIA

Fractional IT leadership for 20 to 200 person businesses in PA, MD and DE.

I spent twenty years on the other side of the table.

Every business owner knows the meeting. A polished rep sits across from you with a quote for servers, software, or a maintenance renewal, and you have no way to tell whether it is fair. You sign, because the business has to run.

I was that rep. For more than twenty years I sold and delivered enterprise technology, including a statewide storage contract for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania worth over $200M. I know how those quotes get built. I know where the margin hides, which line items are real, and which ones count on you not asking.

In 2003 we took the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's statewide out-of-warranty maintenance contract away from an incumbent charging $8.8M a year. Our price was $2.7M a year. Then we ran it at 99.2% SLA attainment, including 4-hour on-site repair anywhere in the state. Pomeroy still holds that contract today, 23 years later.

Same coverage, a third of the price, and the customer never left. That is what this work looks like when it is done right.

CROIA is me sitting on your side of the table now. Send me the biggest IT contract you have: a renewal, a maintenance agreement, an MSP quote. I will tell you plainly whether it is fair and what I would do about it. That first read costs you nothing. If I find savings and you hire me to go get them, my fee comes out of what you save.

I am in Mechanicsburg. I will come to your office, sit in the chair across from you, and work the problem in person. That is the whole model: enterprise experience, on the owner's side of the table.
